Skokie celebrates range at annual Competition of Cultures – Chicago Tribune

For nearly three many years Skokie has been celebrating its range and welcoming attendees to “go to the world” throughout the annual Competition of Cultures.

Held Could 18, the Skokie Park District occasion grew from humble beginnings and now has individuals from 38 cultures, 24 sponsors and 16 distributors, stated Jon Marquardt, the Park District’s assistant superintendent of recreation.

“It’s this satisfaction in cultural heritage that marks the longevity and success of this community-centered occasion,” Marquardt stated.

The pageant provided an eclectic mixture of music, artwork, dance and kids’s actions. Attendees have been inspired to make use of a passport within the pageant’s program to information then “all over the world” to discover actions, worldwide delicacies, and leisure.

The weekend’s kick-off occasion, a pageant of quick movies, was offered Friday night on the Oakton Group Middle.

Efe Sahinoglu of Skokie attended on Saturday along with his household.

“We like range and Skokie welcomes everybody,” Sahinoglu stated. “The pageant offers us an opportunity to expertise totally different cultures, their traditions and meals.”

Emin Safarov is a Skokie resident and was the organizer of the Azerbaijani cultural exhibit.

The Kids’s Pavilion provided children an opportunity to be taught extra about life in different elements of the world, whereas the Worldwide Market featured native clothes, jewellery and musical devices.

Marquardt stated the ethnic people artwork pageant is reliant on neighborhood volunteers, making a particular environment.
