New York theatregoers might be spoiled for alternative this June, as two theatre festivals devoted to amplifying ladies’s voices will run again to again (with some overlap in between) at two Off-Broadway venues.
First up is the Girls in Theatre Competition introduced by Challenge Y Theatre Firm at A.R.T./New York Theatres. Showcasing 10 productions, together with two totally staged world premieres from playwrights Megan Monaghan Rivas and Amina Henry, the competition will run June 5-30.

Vanderburg and Drew Venderburg’s Dancing Lady; Jen Rudin’s Stunning Pasadena; and Katen Brennan’s The Shoebox.
Rounding out the programming might be Margolin’s play The Day the Butcher Store Closed, which is being developed within the lead-up to the competition as a part of the New Play Residency.
